Three Oregon State Parks converge around Mitchell Point in the Columbia River Gorge just west of Hood River; rugged, secluded Seneca Fouts Memorial State Natural Area is the easternmost.

Overview

Seneca Fouts Memorial State Natural Area forms the eastern third of a state park complex on Mitchell Point near Hood River, Oregon on the Columbia River Gorge. The rugged terrain at Seneca Fouts, while mountainous and desolate, is nonetheless beautiful. Mitchell Point provides glorious panoramas of the Gorge, and recreational opportunities nearby include hiking, whitewater rafting, wildlife and bird watching.

Location & Information

Reach Seneca Fouts Memorial State Natural Area via Interstate 84 6 miles west of Hood River. Only eastbound traffic can access the park via Exit 58. Westbound travelers will have to double back from the next exit loop. Seneca Fouts is a day-use area that requires no fee. For information, call 1 (800) 551-6949.

Activities

  • Hiking: The summit of Mitchell Point is a 2.6-mile round-trip climb gaining 1,270 feet, and the views of the Columbia River Gorge are worth the steep, rugged trek. A side trail traverses the saddle over to Mitchell Spur.
  • Two nearby rivers, the Hood and the White Salmon, are excellent for white-water rafting trips—lots of guided excursions are available.
